A photoshoot at the beach in Florida is always a challenge but sometimes Mother Nature throws an extra set of hurdles in the way. The day of this shoot happened to be one of the windiest days in recent months. This can be a problem for many reasons including turning your lightboxes into parasails. When shooting on location, sometimes you are working without team or even just an assistant. In this case you always add weights to your light stands to give them a little more stability. In a pinch, your camera bag can be a nice substitute.
This shoot was at St Petersburg beach on the west coast of Florida. These are beautiful white sand beaches and the sunsets can’t be beat. It goes without saying that the beaches are more crowded on the weekends than on weekdays so if you are planning a beach wedding or a posed beach shoot it might be better to plan your shoots around those peak times. There was a wedding going on about 100 yards down the beach from our shoot. Unfortunately for the people having the wedding, they picked a very popular section to hold the ceremony. This is also something to consider when shooting on a public beach. You may have to walk a ways to get away from the crowds but it is worth it in the end.
